Egypt Religion

Egypt religion is largely comprised of Islamic religion, with a smaller percentage of Christianity and a marginal percentage of other religions practiced.

The main variants of Islam practiced in Egypt are Sunni, at 89% of the Islamic population, and Shia which is practiced among the remaining 1% of Islamic followers.

Christianity is practiced by about 9% of Egyptians, and has been present in the country from the first century. About 95% of Egypt's Christians are members of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, which is an Oriental Orthodox church. Catholic and Protestant groups can also be found in the country.

There are a very small number of Jewish followers in Egypt, although many were evicted from the country by Gamal Abdel Nasser after the 1956 Suez Crisis.

Bahá'í Faith is practiced by a very small percentage of the population. Bahá'í is largely unrecognised, and followers face prejudice and persecution – they are not even allowed to list their religion on ID documents or birth certificates.
