Egypt Local Phrases

Standard and Egyptian Arabic is widely spoken and understood almost everywhere, so having a few key Egypt local phrases on hand will impress locals and make them feel more at ease.

One of the most important phrases is the common greeting of ‘Salama alekum’ which means ‘Peace be with you’. You can say this when you come across locals, and then reply to the greeting with ‘Wa alekum es salam’, meaning ‘And upon you be peace’.

You can also ask them how they are by saying ‘Izayak(for male)’ or ‘Izayek (for female)’.The reply to this is ‘Ilhamdoulilah’, meaning ‘fine’.

Phrases which will come in handy when walking or shopping at the markets includes ‘La shukran’ which is a polite way of saying ‘no thanks’, as well as ‘Min tadlak’ to say please, ‘How much is this?’ to ask how much an item is, ‘Da ghali awi’ if it costs too much or ‘Rekhis’ if it is cheap.
