Mountain Sinai culture seen on your Overlanding Africa.com trip is typical of the Egyptian culture in general, with a strong emphasis on history and religion however, as this is considered an important location for many due to the fact that it was here that Moses decreed the Ten Commandments. Some of the major cultural aspects of Mount Sinai include:

History:

The rocks of Mount Sinai were formed in the late stage of the Arabian-Nubian Shield's (ANS) evolution, and the area dates back further than the Pharaonic Era of Egypt. This makes Mount Sinai one of the most ancient landmarks in all of Egypt.

Religion:

The religious significance of Mount Sinai is one of the most interesting aspects of this region, and with one of the world’s most ancient monasteries in the form of St. Catherine’s Monastery dating back thousands of years, Christianity and Greek Orthodox religion plays a key role in this area.

Egyptian culture:

While there is a strong sense of religious history in Mount Sinai and surrounds, the area is also a famous Egyptian landmark, with ancient Egyptian cultures dating back as far as the era of pharaohs – these early inhabitants of Saint Katherine City found Turquoise, gold and copper in the area, and built temples and mines around this area.
