Mount Sinai Conservation

Mount Sinai conservation is essential, as the area has both natural and historical value, and the hot, arid climate means that the natural environment faces challenges, and the buildings and dwellings lack adequate water supplies. Conservation includes that of the 6th Century Monastery of St Catherine, which houses ancient relics and manuscripts, and other antiquities. Also as parts of the St Catherine protectorate, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are the cultural and traditional sites of the local Bedouin. There are litter bins and environmentally-friendly toilets around the mountain, and visitors are encouraged not to take local flora or rocks from the mountain or leave litter.

Preservation Mount Sinai

Mount Sinai preservation has been undertaken by various religious organisations, government and local NGOs, who seek to protect both the natural environment whilst preserving the cultural, traditional and spiritual heritage of those who live on the mountain and those in the surrounding regions. Bedouin work in conjunction with Monastery inhabitants to reduce the negative impact of tourism in Mount Sinai. Academics and scientists have worked to preserve the architecture and the treasures within the buildings from being destroyed by the elements or human contact.
