Egypt Money & Banking
Egypt money & banking are fairly tourist-friendly, with a wide number of options on offer, especially in the cities and major tourist areas.
ATMs can be found almost everywhere in the cities, and banks are also widely accessible in all tourist areas. Banks are open from Sunday to Thursday from 08h30 to 14h00, and like many businesses, they close on Fridays, which are holy days in Egypt.
It is generally fairly easy to exchange money, with most banks offering cheaper rates than bureau de changes and hotels. All currencies can be converted from cash, while travellers cheques are generally easy to convert from Pound, Euro or Dollars.
Credit cards, especially Visa and Mastercard, are widely accepted at large hotels, restaurants, tourist sites and large shops, but may not be accepted everywhere so it is best to have cash on hand.
Tipping or baksheesh is widely practiced, and tips of about E£1 will be expected for everything from taxis to waiters, guides, tourist police or even toilet assistants.
