DRC Religion
DRC religion includes a large percentage of Christians, with an equal number of Islamic and traditional beliefs also practiced and no atheists at all in the country.
The largest religious group in DRC is Catholic, with half the population practicing this religion. A further 20% of the population practice various Protestant religions, with Baptist, Methodist and Christian Zionists among the denominations in the country.
Kimbanguism is another Christian religion practiced in DRC, and was originally seen as an offence to missionaries in the country as it is named after Simon Kimbangu, the founder of the denomination. The religion is Baptist in form.
Islamic religion makes up 10% of the population, and has been practiced since the Arab traders arrived in DRC in the 18th Century.
Indigenous beliefs make up the remaining 10% of the population’s religious groups, with forms of animism being the most common religious beliefs. The spirit world and ancestral beliefs play a large role in many traditional religions, and may people practice traditional religions alongside Christianity or Islam.
