DRC Local Phrases

DRC local phrases could include any language from French to Swahili, depending on which part of the country you are currently visiting.

French is widely spoken and understood by most ethnic groups, so having a basic understanding of this language will come in handy when travelling in the DRC.

Common greetings in French include ‘bonjour’ for hello, and ‘ça va?’ or the more formal ‘comment allez-vous?’ to ask ‘how are you?’.  You can also say ‘je m'appelle…’ which means ‘my name is…’.

Kikongo phrases include the basic Kituba greeting of ‘mbóté’ which means ‘hello’ – this is a useful phrase which can be used in most parts of the country.

Swahili is very easy to learn and to speak, and some of the phrases you could try include ‘hakuna matata’ which means ‘no worries’, or ‘Habari za leo’ which means ‘how are you today’. ‘Soli pana’ is another polite phrase, which means ‘I am sorry’ – used to demonstrate sympathy or empathy.
