DRC Money & Banking
DRC money & banking is mostly limited to the country’s capital of Kinshasa, and with the collapsing economy the DRC currency is almost worthless.
Banks are generally open in the morning each weekday from 08h00 until 11h30, and many counters may close earlier. Foreign currency is generally hard to exchange through official channels, but can be done at a cheap rate on the black market.
Banks in Kinshasa include African Development Bank, World Bank, Citibank Zaire, Banque de Kinshasa, Barclays Bank, Stanbic Bank Congo, Grindlays Bank, Fransabank and Nouvelle Bank of Kinshasa.
Credit cards and ATM cards are hardly ever accepted except at major hotels and some of the more recent banking points.
The currency most widely used is the US Dollar, but be warned – old bills or anything under $20 will not be accepted.
Travellers cheques are almost never accepted, especially outside of Kinshasa, and can be extremely hard to exchange. Fees are usually exorbitant, and with corruption widespread in the country, tourists may be overcharged.
