DRC Languages

DRC languages you may hear on your OverlandingAfrica.com trip include the official language of French as well as four other national languages and a number of tribal dialects spoken in various parts of the country.

French is spoken widely across the country, especially in urban and trading areas and less so in the rural areas.  French was developed among the more educated from the Belgium rule, however was kept as an official language as it is ethnically neutral and understood by all groups.

Kikongo has a number of variations or dialects. The most common form spoken in DRC is the Kituba variant which is used for administrative purposes as well as spoken fairly widely across the country.

Lingala is spoken fairly widely in the Kinshasa region as well as parts of the Upper Congo River, and is also the official language of the army.

Kingwana, or Copperbelt Swahili is also spoken fairly often, especially in the Katanga area.

There are two major variations of Tshiluba spoken, Luba-Kasai, spoken in the East Kasai Region and Luba-Lulua, in the West Kasai Region.
