Health Precautions in DRC
It is highly essential to follow basic health precautions in DRC – health care options are extremely poor, and disease is rife.
Food and Water in DRC
Tap water is not safe to drink, and ice blocks should also be avoided. Bottled water can be purchased in most places. Food can be contaminated, so never eat anything that has been left to stand, and peel all fruit and vegetables. Street food vendors should be avoided.
Diseases in DRC
Malaria, AIDS, cholera, polio, rabies, meningitis, Ebola, typhoid, River Blindness and tick bite fever are just some of the diseases which pose a threat to locals and travellers alike. Vaccines are essential and contact with any infected animals or people should be avoided.
Medicine and Doctors in DRC
Doctors are overworked and poorly paid, and hospitals are extremely primitive with awful conditions and overcrowding. Medical facilities are very sparse, with basic supplies often not available. Facilities and clinics are often situated very far from rural areas too.
