DRC Conservation

DRC conservation includes efforts to protect the country’s wildlife against poaching and habitat loss, as well as the preservation of the country’s rare and ancient plants and trees in its rainforests.

There are five major national parks which have all been listed as Vulnerable on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. The parks include Garumba, Kahuzi-Biega, Salonga and Virunga National Parks and the Okapi Wildlife Reserve.

Strong conservation efforts by wildlife groups such as World Conservation Society, who remained in the country even during the civil war, are finally beginning to have an effect and recent treaties with government have restored relative safety to some of the major national parks.

Preservation DRC

In a country almost ruined by years of war, violence and extreme poverty and disease, preservation DRC is a long-standing challenge as almost all environmental areas are considered ‘fair game’ by military and settlers, as well as logging industries and miners.

Very recently, the DRC government has started putting stricter control measures into place, in particular the ban against allocations of new logging concessions.
