Congo Wildlife

Rare and endangered Congo wildlife species includes mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, forest elephants and rhinos.

There are a number of wildlife reserves and game parks situated within the country, which offer a relatively safe and protected area for endangered wildlife in the country.

One of the biggest wildlife reserves is the Odzala National Park in the Cuvette-Ouest Region. This park spans about 13,600 km2 and is one of the most important areas for forest elephant and gorilla populations.

Animals in Congo

Endangered and threatened animals in Congo include giant African water shrew, African golden cat, forest buffalo, bush pigs, leopards, black colobus, humpback whale, side-striped jackal, hun shrew, ja slit-faced bat, lion, mandrill, spotted-necked otter and West African manatee.

Other rare animal species include the bonobo, which is a pygmy chimpanzee sharing 98% of our DNA. The Atlantic Coast of the Congo Basin is also the largest leatherback turtle nesting ground in the world.

Gorillas, especially Western lowland gorillas and the extremely rare mountain gorillas, can be found in certain parts of the forests and in reserves, however many populations are under threat due to poaching, warfare and habitat loss from the logging industry.
