Congo Safety

Many visitors get confused between Congo and its neighbour the DRC, which is much more dangerous and unstable publically.

So is it safe to travel in Congo then? If you take basic Congo safety precautions, then yes – Congo is safe to visit, and offers many of the benefits of the Congo area without the danger and high level of instability that neighbour DRC has.

The Pool region, including the Brazzaville-Pointe Noire road and railway are known to be unstable, and the Ubangi River in the Likouala region bordering the DRC should be avoided at all costs, as rebel fighting could break out at any time on these areas.

Is it Safe to Travel in Congo?

Walking alone is not recommended, and walking anywhere in the country after dark is not a good idea. Street crime is not too high, but in the bigger cities muggings, pick pocketing and other crimes can occur, so keep valuables out of sight at all times.

While the political situation in Congo is fairly calm at present, problems can arise at any time. Large crowds, especially demonstrations, should be avoided.
