Congo Religion - Overlanding Africa.com

Congo religion seen on your OverlandingAfrica.com trip is divided into three main groups – about half the population are Christian and almost half practice traditional religions with a remaining small percentage practicing Islam.

Congo government has a Fundamental Act which mandates freedom of religion, and there is no official religion.

Christianity is the largest religion, especially in urban areas, with about 90% of Christians practicing Catholicism. The remaining 10% of Protestant denominations include Zionists, Baptists, Seventh Day Adventists and Methodists among others.

Traditional beliefs vary per tribal group and region, with most practising a form of animism or other similar ancestral beliefs.

The monotheistic religion of Nzambi is widely practiced among the Bakongo groups. In this religion, Nzambi created the world after an illness, vomiting first the sun, then the stars, and then animals and finally people and then went to live with the ancestral spirits. It is believed that people join the ancestral world after they die to protect the living. If they have been murdered, they roam the earth until they have been avenged.

There are also a small percentage of Islamic followers, mostly in urban areas.
