Congo Plants
Second only to the DRC, Congo plants include some of the most diverse and rich environments and largest forest areas.
There are about 6,000 plant species in the country, which range from forest species, savanna and grasslands to palms and crops such as cassava, sugar, rice, corn, peanuts, vegetables, coffee and cocoa, as well as woods like ebony and teak. Oil and coconut palms are also an important natural resource, and can be found in coastal and mangrove areas.
Major forest species of plants include bromelaids, venus fly trap, ferns, orchids, buttress roots, and Kapok trees. Ancient mahogany trees can also be found, some of which date back hundreds of years.
Vegetation in Congo
Vegetation in Congo includes equatorial forest, savanna in the south, coastal plains, fertile valleys and forested flood plains and mangroves.
Roughly 70% of the country consists of forest areas, which are under major threat of destruction as logging industries and human habitation progress further into the remote areas of forest.
