Health Precautions in Congo

With very basic to poor health care facilities in the country it is a very good idea to take basic health precautions in Congo to prevent illness from ruining your travel adventures.

Food and Water in Congo
Tap water is generally not safe to drink, and is often polluted. Bottled water is available at cheap prices almost everywhere however. Food should always be cooked, and fruit and vegetables should be peeled before eating. Avoid street food vendors where possible, and avoid food which has been left to go cold.

Health Risks in Congo
Mosquitoes carry malaria and other diseases, and water can be contaminated in both drinking supplies with cholera, or in swimming areas with bilharzias or even River Blindness.

Ebola in Congo
Outbreaks of Ebola have occurred in recent years, and travellers should be extra careful to avoid bushmeat and not touch any wild animal that may be carrying the virus. Generally this is not airborne, but basic precautions should be taken to avoid contact with any person who has Ebola or appears sick in any way.
