Cameroon Wildlife

Cameroon wildlife is fairly diverse, with about 409 mammal species, 32 of which are endangered.

Game in Cameroon can be found in the country’s primary national parks and reserves.

Dja Faunal Reserve
A UNESCO Heritage Site, this reserve is home to about over 107 mammals and over 320 bird species, and spans about 5,260 km².

Korup National Park
Korup National Park is situated in western Cameroon near the Nigeria border, and is home to about 50 species of large mammals.

Waza National Park
Waza National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site spanning about 1,700 km². The park is home to large numbers of antelope as well as Western giraffe and other species.

Animals in Cameroon

Animals in Cameroon include a number of endemic species which are only found in certain parts of West Africa.

Local animal species include Eisentraut's striped mouse, the African wood mouse, Mount Oku mouse, Mittendorf's striped grass mouse, two brush-furred mouse species, Oku mouse shrew, Rumpi mouse shrew, western vlei rat, Hartwig's soft-furred mouse and Isabella's shrew.

Critically endangered or threatened species include primates such as Cross River gorilla, Mainland drill, Preuss's red colobus and common chimpanzee.
