Cameroon Safety

Many travelers wonder about Cameroon safety - is it safe to travel in Cameroon?

Cameroon safety is something all travellers need to consider. While Cameroon is mostly a safe destination, recent unrest has been reported in some parts of the country.

Is it Safe to Travel in Cameroon?

The Eastern Provinces, as well as border areas such as Central Africa Republic and Nigeria are not safe for non-essential travel, and areas around the Lake Chad region are also not recommended. The Bakassi Peninsula area has also had some unrest and banditry has been reported around this area.

In big cities, the main thing to be wary of is petty crime. Pick pocketing and muggings can sometimes occur in the capital of Yaounde, so travellers should keep valuables out of sight and should not walk around with cameras to avoid being easy targets.

Large crowds should be avoided, especially if street demonstrations look likely. Even in the recent outbreaks of violence between police and military, both parties made precautions to tell tourists to leave the area, but it is best to be aware of your surroundings and avoid areas which are known to be unsafe.
