Cameroon Religion

Cameroon religion is fairly diverse, with a blend of Muslim, Christian and traditional religions to be found across the country.

Islam is widely practiced all over the country, while Christianity is concentrated to the western and southern regions. Traditional beliefs are often practiced alongside Islam or Christianity.

Islam was spread by the Fulani tribes in Cameroon in the 19th Century, and the order most practiced is the Sufi order.  Many tribes like the Kurdi practice a form of Islam, however were labelled ‘pagan’ by predominant Islamic tribes and are fairly recent converts comparatively.

Christianity is practiced mostly in the southern and western areas, with an equal number of Catholic and Protestant based denominations including Baptist, Congregational, Methodist and Lutheran groups.

Traditional beliefs are almost never practiced in larger cities, but are common in smaller villages across the country. Many Cameroonians practice traditional religions alongside Christianity or Islam, and spirituality is an important aspect in many Cameroon cultures.
