Cameroon's People
Cameroon's people vary for each region of the country, and are as diverse as the habits across the country.
There are about 250 distinct ethnic groups to be found in Cameroon, which are divided into five large regional-cultural divisions.
Western highlanders or semi-bantu grassfielders make up the largest percentage, and include tribes such as Bamileke, Bamum and smaller Tikar groups in the north-west.
Coastal tropical forest groups include tribes such as the Bassa, Duala and smaller groups in the south-west.
Southern tropical forest groups then include Beti-Pahuin, Bulu, Fang, Maka, Njem, and Baka pygmies while Islamic groups northern semi-arid regions like the Sahel and central highlands, including the Fulani. Non-Islamic or recent Islamic groups like the Kurdi are found in the northern desert and central highlands areas.
With such diverse ethnic groups, Cameroon has one of the most complex demographics in Africa, yet minimal tribal clashing occurs in the country.
