Cameroon Money & Banking
Make sure you understand the Cameroon money & banking options on your travels to ensure that you do not get stuck without funds.
Many areas in Cameroon are fairly accessible when it comes to banking and money, with at least one ATM which accepts Visa in every town. Credit cards are accepted in some shops, hotels and restaurants, but generally cash is used more often in the country.
There are foreign exchange facilities scattered throughout the country, at hotels, airports, train stations and banks.
Banks include Bicec, SGBC, Crédit Lyonnais and Standard Chartered Bank, and banking hours are typically Monday to Friday from 07h30 to 15h30. Banks are usually closed over weekends, so make sure you go in the week to avoid disappointment.
Travellers checks can be exchanged at some points, including banks – euros are generally the easiest and quickest to exchange but other currencies like pounds or dollars can also be exchanged at certain facilities. Express Exchange moneychangers exchange cheques and US dollars in cash, with branches in Yaoundé, Douala, Bamenda and Buea.
