Cameroon Languages

Cameroon languages you may hear on your OverlandingAfrica.com tour include the official languages of French and English as well as roughly 24 major traditional languages and a number of other indigenous regional languages.

A wide number of Cameroon locals in the south-western and north-western areas speak a blend of English and local dialects known as pidgin English, which is apparent in many music styles of this region.

The government encourages bilingualism, however most Cameroonians speak either English or French, and often neither of these languages.

With a total of about 230 languages across the country, Cameroon’s languages are as diverse as its ethnic groups and regions and the area largely determines the language spoken.

Most visitors will be able to get by with a basic knowledge of French and / or English, especially in the cities where English is widely spoken and understood. In the rural areas and villages however, hardly any Cameroon locals speak English and only traditional languages are spoken.
