Cameroon Culture

Cameroon culture experienced on your OverlandingAfrica.com tour is rich and diverse, as would be expected from such an ethnically diverse country.

Cultural influences vary across the regions, but there is a strong influence on storytelling and traditional practices, which is apparent in local arts and crafts as well as music, dance, film and cuisine.

Cameroon Performing Arts
Cameroon has a rich history of storytelling, festivals and social gatherings, and art and music play an important role in all tribal cultures.

Cameroon Arts and Crafts
Woodcarvings and sculptures are the most common form of Cameroon art, with basket weaving, brass and bronze work and beading also to be found in some areas.

Cameroon Cuisine
Cuisine varies by region, but a large evening meal is common throughout the country and is an important part of social interaction. Specialties include cocoyams, plantains, potatoes, yams or cous-cous with a range of sauces, which is eaten by hand.

Cameroon Customs and Traditions
As typical in any Muslim country, eating with the left hand is frowned upon. This is the ‘bathroom’ hand, and food and greetings should only be done with the clean right hand.
