Burkina Faso Religion

Burkina Faso religion is predominantly Muslim, with additional traditional beliefs and Christianity practiced in some areas.

Islam is the primary religion in Burkina, and the majority of Muslims in Burkina Faso belong to the Sunni branch, with a small group who belong to the Shi'a branch. A number of Sunni Muslims identify with the Tijaniyah Sufi or Salafi traditions.

Traditional beliefs are mostly animist, with ancestral traditions and the spirit world playing an important role in almost all Burkinabe beliefs. Traditional healers are often used alongside more ‘westernised’ doctors, and many Burkina people have a strong belief in ancient practices.

Christianity is a relatively small group, with the primary denomination being Catholic. This religion was brought the country from the colonising settlers, and some immigrants in more recent history, and is often practiced alongside traditional religions.

Interestingly enough there are almost no atheists in Burkina, and most people practice at least one of the country’s main religions.
