Burkina Faso's People

Burkina Faso's people live in relative harmony, with a range of diverse tribal groups living together.

As an ethnically integrated, secular state Burkina is one of the few nations which are able to live together without tribal clashes and problems.

The largest group in Burkina Faso is the Mossi, who make up 48% of the population.  The Mossi are descended from warriors who migrated to Burkina Faso from Ghana and established an empire lasting over 800 years. Mostly farmers, the Mossi are led by the Mogho Naba, whose court is in the capital city of Ouagadougou.

The Bobo tibes are the next largest tribe. The largest Bobo community in the south is in Bobo-Dioulasso, the second largest city in Burkina Faso.

There is also a fairly large Fulani group in Burkina, who are mostly nomadic farmers and herders. Mande tribes are also a fairly large group in the country.
