Burkina Faso Languages

You will hear a variety of Burkina Faso languages on your OverlandingAfrica.com tour, mostly French and the traditional Moré language spoken by the Mossi tribes.

French is Burkina’s national language, with about 90% of the population fluent in French. Many Burkinabe also speak a traditional language either as a first or second language.

The second most widely spoken language in Burkina is Moré, which is spoken by the Mossi tribes who are the country’s largest demographic group. There are a number of dialects of this language for each region, including Saremdé, Taolendé, Yaadré, Ouagadougou, Yaande, Zaore and Yana.

Dyula is spoken by Mande tribes in Burkina Faso as well as in neighbouring countries such as Côte d'Ivoire, and is used quite frequently for trade in West Africa.

Other traditional languages include Fulani, which is spoken across a number of West African countries; Gurma and Senefo are also spoken as well as the Tuareg language of Talmashek which is spoken by a small percentage of the population.
