Burkina Faso Culture

Burkina Faso culture is fairly diverse and very fascinating, with a wide range of influences ranging from traditional masks to film festivals.

Cultural influences are large traditional West African, with very little influence from colonisation other than the French language and some minor changes to traditional cultures, especially in literature and performing arts.

Burkina Faso Arts
Traditional masks are the key art form in Burkina, with each tribe having a different style. Mossi masks are usually tall antelope, while the Bobo masks have a wide range of animals but are mostly famous for their butterfly masks. Lobi tribes also use wood carvings in their art forms.

Burkina Faso Literature
Once an oral tradition, literature has made a slight move to written work, but is still a largely spoken tradition which crosses over into performing arts.

Burkina Faso Film
Annual film festivals are held in Burkina; bringing a wide range of African film makers from across the continent each year.

Burkina Faso Traditions and Etiquette
Homosexuality is still a crime in Burkina, and eating and using the left hand is highly frowned on as this is the ‘bathroom’ hand.
