To ensure optimal health, vaccinations for Botswana are essential.
All travelers should have shots for hepatitis A and B as well as typhoid. Yellow fever inoculations for travelers over 1 year of age are essential to enter the country, and a vaccination certificate is often requested when entering the country.
Rabies shots are essential for travelers who will be traveling to areas rich in wildlife, especially if they will be exposed to bats or dogs.
Two measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) shots are recommended for travelers born after 1956, who have not already had their MMR shots as children. A tetanus-diphtheria revaccination is also recommended every 10 years.
Tetanus or ‘lockjaw’ is a nasty illness which is usually gotten from dirty or rusty metal or similar, and is a good shot to have for adventurists who may be injured in the outdoors.
Travellers should visit their doctor about 4-8 weeks before leaving for Botswana, and it is a good idea to find a doctor who specialises in travel medication and ailments.
