Botswana plants include a large percentage of shrubs, due to the desert and savannas taking up such a large part of the country.
Other plants include a mixture of shrub trees, palms, baobabs, marulas, and a large number of edible plants such as the tsamma melon and the wild cucumber, as well as a number of plants which bushmen use for medicinal purposes.
Vegetation in Botswana
Vegetation in Botswana is as diverse as its bird and animal life, with a number of different ecosystems.
The Kalahari sandsheet is comprised of savanna grasslands with thorny scrub, while in the eastern hardveld rocky hills are covered in tree savanna. The north and eastern parts of the country are comprised of mopane woodland.
The Okavango Delta is comprised of floodplains, forests, islands, huge trees and dry rivers with varied vegetation.
The Chobe area consists of trees and bush lining the river banks, with thick bush further inland away from the rivers.
The Makgadikgadi Pans have no plant life at all, but are surrounded by vast open grasslands dotted with clusters of huge fan palms.
