Botswana Local Phrases
While English is widely spoken across the country, knowing a few Botswana local phrases will go a long way in pleasing the locals and making friends on your travels.
Tswana or Setswana is the language most widely spoken in Botswana, and is fairly easy to learn. Knowing a few basics will help you make the most from your adventures.
Greetings are usually simple, and you will say ‘Dumela Rra’ (pronounced borra) when addressing men, or ‘Dumela Mma’ (pronounced bomma) when addressing women. A handshake is also a sign of respect. You should greet everyone you meet in the formal way, saying hello and asking how they are.
Saying please (Tsweetswee) and thank you (Ke a leboga) when making purchases or accepting services at a lodge or restaurant is also important to remember.
‘Ke kopa’ means 'I would like...' and is a good phrase to know when shopping or at markets or restaurants, and ‘G ke batle sepe’, which means 'I do not want anything' is also useful when dealing with persistent vendors or market traders.
