Botswana's people are fairly diverse, with a large number of nomadic and desert bushmen tribes, who have retained their hunter gatherers and herder traditions and live largely undisturbed in various regions across the country.
The largest group is the Tswana, who speak the Setswana dialect and are comprised of eight smaller tribes, of which Batswana are the largest. Tswana tribes play a key role in the country, and are represented in the House of Chiefs, which along with the President and National Assembly draft and approve laws in Botswana.
Traditional bushmen tribes include the Basarwa, who were originally hunter-gatherers but switched to farming in more recent years due to development and traditional land marginalization. These tribes are the most rural and indigenous of Botswana, and live as close to their traditional way of life as possible.
The Kgalagadi tribes are another noteworthy group, who share many similarities to bushmen tribes, and live in the Kgalagadi region only. They are traditionally herders who have also moved into farming practices.
