Botswana Money & Banking
Botswana money and banking is relatively simple, with a wide range of banks and facilities on offer in the larger cities and tourist areas.
Botswana’s currency is the Pula, which means rain. Due to Botswana’s parched climate, rain is the most precious resource, so it is understandable how their currency has this value!
Credit and debit cards are widely accepted – especially in tourist areas and larger cities. ATM’s are generally safe and reliable; however you should take normal precautions when drawing money in busy areas. American Express cards are sometimes accepted, but not at all outlets so be prepared.
There are banks and foreign exchange services situated throughout major towns and tourist areas, and travellers cheques are also widely accepted.
Banks include Barclays Bank of Botswana, Standard Chartered Botswana Limited, Zimbank Botswana, First National Bank of Botswana, Union Bank Botswana Limited, ANZ Grindlays Bank Botswana Limited. Banking hours are typically from 08h00 to 15h00 at most banks, from Monday to Friday, with limited hours on Saturdays.
