Archaeological recovery in the Makgadikgadi has revealed the presence of prehistoric man through abundant finds of stone tools - some of which have been dated early enough to establish their origin as pre-Homo sapiens.

The area is home to one of Africa's biggest zebra populations, and no vehicles other than quad bikes can be used on the delicate pans.

There is a national park on the pans, called Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. Game in this park includes springbok, gemsbok, wildebeest, zebra, hippo, duiker, bushbuck and thousands of flamingos.
