Botswana customs are fairly straightforward, and as the same as any customs in Africa or internationally.
Basic guidelines prohibit, restrict or approve the import of substances depending on their nature and the declaration of controlled import items.
- Narcotic, habit-forming drugs and related substances are prohibited
- Military firearms, ammunition and explosives are prohibited
- Indecent and obscene material such as pornography are prohibited
- Meat and meat products are restricted
- Plants and plant cuttings are subject to plant health restrictions
- Boat, mokoro or aquatic apparatus are prohibited without Import Permit
Customs officials are not known to be unreasonable or corrupt, and it is almost unheard of for officials to take bribes. However, travellers who try and offer bribes may face severe repercussions.
Importing illegal substances could also have dire consequences, as Botswana is extremely hard on drug smuggling. Basic international customs laws apply when travelling here and travellers should take care to declare anything even vaguely suspect – even cameras should be declared.
