Botswana culture is an interesting blend of Tswana and English cultures.
Previously multiculturalism was discouraged in Botswana, however in more recent years it is embraced and a wide diversity of ethnic groups is present in the country’s culture and pastimes.
Botswana Literature
There are many fine Botswana writers, including Alexander McCall Smith who wrote the popular Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency, which is set in Botswana. Other writers include South Africa-born Bessie Head, Barolong Seboni, Unity Dow, Mositi Torontle and Moteane Melamu.
Botswana Sports
Soccer is Botswana’s national sport, and is very popular amongst all Botswana locals across the country. Golf and tennis are also fairly popular in the country.
Botswana Arts and Crafts
Arts and crafts play an important role in Botswana culture, and items such as intricate baskets have been exported to countries including the US from the 1970’s.
Botswana Music
Traditional Tswana music was mostly comprised of voice and traditional string instruments until the end of the colonization times, when it was modernized to include drumming as it was considered too undeveloped. In recent years traditional music is becoming more popular again.
