Bring the Kids! – Family Safaris and Holidays in Africa

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

For parents looking for the ultimate holiday experience, an Africa family safari offers one of the most rewarding experiences for children of all ages to enjoy – combining all the fun of a safari in Africa with child-friendly activities and plenty of learning opportunities. With a number of affordable family safaris on offer, it has never been easier to enjoy a wildlife and nature experience in one of Africa’s top safari destinations.

Some of the biggest benefits to family holidays in Africa include the following:
1.    Fun for the whole family
All too often children get bored on adult-tailored safaris. With many activities that are more targeted to grown ups the younger generation are left to try and enjoy the same activities, or settle for a play area at camp, with not very many activities specifically tailored for children to enjoy. Family holidays in Africa meanwhile are designed to ensure that children and adults both get the most out of the safari with plenty of attractions for children of all ages to enjoy.

2.    Learning experiences abound
From the abundance of wildlife and bird life to be seen on a typical African safari, to the various landscapes and environments to be seen, Africa offers plenty of learning experiences for parents to share with their children. A wide range of interesting subjects can be explored on an informal basis, helping children learn more about the animals, birds, plants, history, culture and people of Africa – without ever having to open a book! Learning as a family is one of the best ways to learn and on a typical Africa family safari children will be able to discover a whole world of wonder on every game drive, day trip or walk.

3.    Experience all the thrills of a safari in Africa
Enjoying thrilling experiences as a family is excellent for bonding – giving plenty of memories that will last a lifetime. Some of the most popular family holidays in Africa include tours to top destinations such as Namibia (home to towering dunes, vast landscapes of contrast, game-rich regions and many exciting activities), Zambia (where the magnificent Victoria Falls can be seen, and plenty of adventure sports from white river rafting to micro-light flights can be enjoyed), Botswana (excellent game viewing, river cruises, bushman tracking adventures and plenty of other activities on offer) and South Africa (Kruger National Park, beaches, activities and many other attractions) to name but a few – each offering a myriad of things to see, do and experience within Africa.

4.    Cost effective safari for the whole family
Family safaris are one of the most affordable safari options especially those that stick to the basics. Camping safaris and overland tours give the best value for money as these types of safaris use standard accommodation and often camping rather than luxury accommodation at lodges that cost the earth. Many activities are included in the tour cost which means that there are very little additional costs.

With so many benefits on offer and so much fun and learning to be enjoyed it is no wonder that Africa family safari tours are such a popular choice for families seeking affordable holidays in Africa.

5 Tips for Choosing a Discounted African Safari

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

For many travellers finding discounted African safari packages may well be the only way for them to experience the wonders of safari in Africa.

With the recession still fresh in many consumers’ minds, and constant price hikes, travel is sometimes classed as a ‘luxury’, and many simply do not feel able to afford a travel experience such as a safari – especially students, singles or other budget conscious travellers.

With a bit of know-how however, and a few good tips on how to find affordable safaris in Africa, anyone can experience the thrills, adventure and spectacular wildlife of a safari in some of Africa’s top regions.

Try these tips to learn more about how you can make your African safari dream into a reality:
1.    Consider overland tours rather than luxury tours
Overland tours offer one of the most affordable safari options allowing you to save on expenses such as luxury lodges and added frills. Travelling by overlanding trucks, most overland experiences offer camping accommodation or very basic accommodation rather than high-end accommodation. With a range of tour duration options, from short trips to intensive Trans Africa tours that take you from Cape to Cairo, there is something to suit all tastes ensuring a highly memorable and affordable way to enjoy a safari in Africa.

2.    Don’t take chances with unknown tour operators
While it may be tempting to try a small, fly by night travel agency, this may end up costing you far more in the long run. Many unsuspecting travellers have been lured by the thought of a good deal only to find themselves stranded at the airport with no tickets, no money and no way of finding the agent that sold them a fake discounted African safari package. Only registered, licensed and reputable tour agencies should ever be consulted, and if you are unsure, rather listen to your instincts and try a good agency instead. Do your homework online, check testimonials and don’t ever part with your money until you are certain that they are not trying to scam you.

3.    Speak to a tour agency to learn about seasonal specials
Once you have found a registered and good tour agency, find out if they are running any seasonal specials. High season for overland tours can be more expensive; while low season may often have cheaper prices all round. Tour operators can advise you on the best options to suit your budget and can also recommend travel packages that may appeal to you, to help you find a tour that is good for the pocket as well as meeting your requirements.

4.    Choose your tour destination carefully
You may want to visit all of Africa’s top safari destinations, from South Africa to Namibia, Kenya, Botswana or Mozambique, however realistically speaking it makes more financial sense to choose one country for a shorter tour. Countries such as Botswana or Namibia offer a wide diversity of wildlife and birdlife, with different landscapes found across each region. You will be able to get all the benefits of a full safari, with the added advantage of a more affordable overland tour as you are staying within one area.

5.    Consider a short tour
You can save a huge deal by opting for a short tour of a week or 10 days rather than a full blown tour. This will allow you to enjoy game viewing, bird watching and many other activities, without forking out thousands for a long safari. This is one of the simplest ways to enjoy discounted African safaris.

Is There Such A Thing As A Cheap African Safari?

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

As one of the most popular destinations in the world, finding cheap safari in Africa may seem challenging.

There are many myths surrounding travel in Africa, and safaris in particular are often assumed to be solely for the rich to enjoy. Knowing what to look for, and knowing where to find the best deals is essential to get all the benefits of an affordable safari in Africa – debunking common safari myths and making it possible for anyone to experience the wonders of safari in one of the world’s most fascinating and beautiful continents.

The most common myths regarding safaris in Africa include the following:

Myth 1: you need to be rich to experience a safari
While obviously there is a huge demand for high-level luxury safaris, these are just one end of the travel spectrum, and with so many different options to choose from just about anyone and everyone can enjoy a safari.

One of the most popular ways to find cheap African safari specials is through overlanding companies. Overlanding is fast becoming a hugely accessible and affordable way to travel, allowing travellers to skip on the luxuries and opt for a more ‘real’ travel experience. Overland vehicles are used, and guests camp overnight, helping with basic duties such as cooking or chores and staying at simple guest houses where no camping is available. Aside from being one of the cheapest ways to enjoy safaris across Africa’s top destinations, from Botswana to Kenya, Namibia, Uganda and many others, this option also offers a memorable and interactive way to travel, making it perfect for cash-strapped students, honeymooners, retired couples or single travellers wanting to travel on a tight budget.

Myth 2: only obscure destinations are possible on a tight budget
Some travellers may fear that a lack of budget will result in only being able to visit some of the lesser-known destinations, or that they will not be able to get the ‘full’ experience or see wildlife without having to spend a lot. While some tour companies may offer discounted safari packages that are less than rewarding, a good company will be able to offer specials for cheap safari in Africa that allow you to see everything that you want to see, while cutting costs by using camping accommodation and other discounted travel options. This way you can see elephant in Botswana or the Big 5 in South Africa, without having to worry about being able to afford the experience.

Myth 3: Africa is very expensive to visit

Sure it may not be quite as cheap as many believe but if you plan ahead and budget carefully Africa is not as expensive as some other destinations. In terms of safaris, staying at campsites or bed and breakfast accommodation, or being on an overland tour for instance, you will save a huge deal on costs, and more often than not, meals are included in overland tours – leaving only the extra costs to consider such as personal items, drinks or gifts. Plan carefully and choose wisely – tours that offer accommodation outside of game parks are cheaper and basic food is always cheaper while luxuries are obviously more of an added cost. Learn to bargain at markets, and always shop around until you find a cheap African safari tour that offers the most value.
Remember that different seasons bring different costs. When planning your dream safari, first work out how much your budget allows you to spend. Then decide the length of your safari – a shorter trip will give you the chance to still enjoy your cheap safari in Africa while keeping costs down.

Overland Tours – The Secret to Finding Discounted African Safaris

Friday, May 14th, 2010

OverlandtoursOne of the biggest attractions of overland tours is that they allow you to travel even on a tight budget. That Africa safari, is now made possible! With the recession still fresh in many consumers’ minds, and the huge costs involved with travel these days, it can be hard to know where to go to find a great travel deal – especially for those who have longed to visit Africa, but simply don’t have the funds for an expensive tour package.

To help travellers find their perfect safari even on a shoestring budget, here are some excellent tips to help find affordable safaris, whatever your budget may be:

1.    Research
There are hundreds of discounted African safaris out there, just waiting for you to try. A simple web search on Google will bring up loads of results – try searching for discounted safaris in Africa, and you will get pages of results that you can check out and compare to find the discounted safaris that best suit your budget and travel needs.

2.    Off season safaris
Generally, peak season overland tours tend to never be discounted, with the off or low season safaris offering great discounts. Africa is situated in the southern hemisphere, which means that summer takes place between December and February – a time that coincides with school holidays across the continent, as well as peak tourist season as many flock to warmer areas to escape the cold winter in the northern hemisphere. Winter on the other hand is low season in Africa, and with less tourists, prices tend to drop. Game viewing is still excellent during winter months, and bird watching is also fairly good, so travellers will still be able to get the full African safari benefits, even if it may be a bit quieter with more rain during these months.

3.    Tour groups
Solo travel has its advantages, but group travel offers far more benefits – especially in terms of prices. Overland groups are the best way to enjoy discounted African safaris, cutting down costs and also adding to the Africa safari experience by allowing you to meet new people, and enjoy a thrilling and rewarding overland adventure. More often than not, you will be able to save thousands when travelling with a group, especially if you choose a low budget camping tour option that stays overnight at camp sites and other cheap accommodation venues rather than luxury lodges and hotels.

4.    Tour planning
You may want to visit almost every country in Africa in one round trip, but realistically, you would be far better off planning carefully and choosing one or two countries that are located fairly near to each other. Each country in Africa offers incredible overland tour options, with abundant game, bird life, culture and activities to be found in almost every region. Choose one of the top overland destinations such as Kenya, Tanzania or Namibia, or focus on a longer safari that covers East African countries or Southern African countries, and you will get the full African feel, at a fraction of the cost of a Cape to Cairo trip.

5.    Short tours
To find the best budget safaris, you will also need to ask around to find the best tour options. If you have always dreamed of going on an Africa safari, but can’t afford a full tour, look for a short tour or even a day tour that departs from a specific location in Africa. If you are staying in South Africa on holiday for example, you could look for short tours that depart from South Africa to Namibia, Botswana or Zambia for instance, ensuring a short but rewarding discounted African safari.
