Good, Clean Fun – Try a Turkish Bath by Tania Wheeler
Needing some good, clean adventure while travelling through Turkey? Why not try a hammam, or a Turkish bath as its better known.
Upon entering the hammam dressing room you will get a cotton wrap, or pestemal, and a pair of slippers, or terlik, along with a key to your cubicle.
Once you have got your kit off and wrapped up in the wrap you are ready to go.
Off to the sauna style room you go with it’s hot, raised stone platform in the center, surrounded by bathing alcoves in pretty coloured quartz tiles. The tiles remove static electricity from the air and help to relax the mind and body. You stretch out on the stone platform and work up a sweat.
Then your attendant take you to one of the basins and you’re scrubbed cleaner than you ever have been in your life! A coarse mitt removes layers of dead skin, then comes the soap. Next, you are doused in warm water over and over and scrubbed clean again.
Back to the stone platform for your massage (which is a bit rougher than a traditional Swedish massage) before you head off to the cool room to chill out and drink some tea.
And that is that! Whew!
