Friday, December 11th, 2009

I love Namibia – no seriously – I LOVE IT!

Huge expanses of desert sand looking like caramel ice cream as far as the eye can see and the rugged coast steeped in the history of violent seas and shipwrecked sailors. Ancient tribes people talk with clicking tongues and cover themselves not with clothes, but with mud. I could go on…. and on…

Summer Travel Tips for Cape Town

Table Mountain

13 things to do and 12 things NOT to do in Cape Town this summer - from the locals who live here!

Do:

-  Take a mini bus taxi down Long Street for the fun of it
-  Eat a crocodile steak at Mama Africa’s
-  Barter for curios at Green Market Square
-  Pat a Great White Shark
-  Sleep in an Airstream Trailer on a roof above Long Street!
-  Visit the eco friendly food market at The Old Biscuit Mill
-  Check out Table Mountain
-  Picnic at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
-  Protect yourself against the sun!
-  Give street kids food (not money)
-  Greet the locals
-  Drive on the left
-  Drink the tap water

Don’t:

-  Walk in the city late at night, especially on your own
-  Give street kids money! A sandwich will work much better
-  Spend your nights in boring hotels!
-  Let a meter taxi rip you off, negotiate your rate
Litter
-  Miss a sunset from Camps Bay beach, sundowner in hand
-  Drink Mampoer… it (really) hurts in the morning!
-  Walk the streets with cameras dangling and dripping in jewellery. This is not New York
-  Worry about malaria – there isn’t any
-  Don’t get a fright when the Noon Gun (cannon) goes off!
-  Forget to take a city tour on a big red double decker bus!
-  Go to Cape Point when the south easter is blowing – go kite surfing at Blouberg instead

Zimbabwe Visa – Day Visa Stopped

Monday, October 26th, 2009

We hear that with immediate effect, Zimbabwe is no longer offering a day visa for travelers wishing to do activities on the Zambian side of the Zambezi.

All travelers leaving Zimbabwe will need to purchase a new visa on their return to the country.

If you plan to take part in Victoria Falls adventure activities based in Zambia, or wish to pay a visit to the Zambian side of the Falls, I suggest you purchase a multiple entry visa on arrival into Zimbabwe to allow you to come and go as you wish.

Zimbabwe Travel Tips

Monday, October 26th, 2009

So much to see and do – where do you start? Here is a short list of things to do and things not to do on a trip to  Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe Overland Tours

Do:
- Have cash in USD or ZAR to pay for day-to-day items and activities
- Spend a extra day or 2 at either end of your trip visiting the local sites
- See Victoria Falls from the air
- See more than just Victoria Falls!
- Take a Lion for a walk at Antelope Park, Gweru (the best campsite in Africa in my humble opinion)
- Get the most out of Zimbabwe by using local guides for sights and activities
- Stick to designated areas and trails within Victoria Falls National Park
- Barter the price for your curios
- Keep your valuables secure at all times
- Leave photocopies of your documentation with someone at home
- Take time to chat to the locals about non-political issues – they are REAL people too

Don’t:
- Believe everything you hear on the news channels
- Rely on your Credit Card to pay for things (if the charges don’t get you the exchange rate will)
- Take photos of any Police or military people or of any check point, border post or installation
- Exchange money ‘on the street’
- Buy curios without bartering first but also don’t fight over a few measly cents
- Walk around Harare at night
- Expect Zimbabwe to be like your home country – this is Africa!
