Is it safe to travel to Egypt?

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011
  • Google+
If there were ever a time to visit North Africa, it’s now. The bloody riots in Libya and Syria have unfairly scared tourists away from neighbouring countries. Egypt in particular are feeling the pinch in tourism, with foreigners cancelling their holidays to the area because they don’t know that it IS safe to be in the country. Our overland expert has just gotten back from Egypt: she says her experience was great! She raved about it. She showed us her pictures and dedicated last month’s ‘Overlanding Africa Newsletter’ to the country. Travellers are leaving amazing reviews on travel forums and blogs about their overland trips to Egypt; saying their experience has been peaceful and enjoyable with locals being super friendly. What the majority of people don’t know is that Egypt is as safe to visit as it was a year ago. The lack of tourists has meant bad news for hotels and tour operators in the area, but its ‘Charlie Chaplin heel-clicking’ good news for anyone who wants to go on an overland trip and avoid the streams of tourists that usually pour out of buses and shuffle around tourist attractions. Take a look at the photos taken while our overlanding expert was over in Egypt a few weeks ago. Tourist Attraction! Above: Karnak Temple in Luxor Cairo! Above: Street in Cairo Peaceful Egypt! Above: Happiness is... Sinaidahab Above: Sinaidahab Would we offer overland trips to unsafe areas? When we send an overland truck into Egypt, we’re confident it’s going to come back. So turn off BBC and stop painting Egypt with the same tar brush. Not fair. Keen to book an overland trip to Egypt? Do it.

Egypt’s Most Talked About Attractions

Egypt is awesome. It’s awesome from an architectural, archaeological and cultural perspective. Not only is Egypt brimming with historical wonders that manage to baffle even the most highly educated minds, but it’s also just so darn beautiful. When chatter of Egypt's breathtaking sites take flight, the main attractions always seem to be The Karnak Temple, The Valley of the Kings, the River Nile and of course the pyramids of Giza. The Karnak Temple This is a city of temples which were built and dedicated to the Theben triad of Amun, Mut and Khonsu. The structures took over 2 000 years to complete. The Karnak Temple wins the proud title of being the largest religious building in the world. Covering about 200 acres of land, 1.5km by 0.8km, the destination has been a place of pilgrimage for almost 4 000 years. karnak_temple_outside_by_classic_glass Photo by Classic Glass Karnak_Temple_Interior_by_Classic_Glass Photo by Classic Glass Karnak_Temple_by_argenberg Photo by Argenberg Karnak_Temple_by_Archer Photo by Archer10 The Nile River Regarded as the longest river in the world, the Nile stretches a length of 6,650 km. The river has two major tributaries: the White Nile and Blue Nile. The White Nile goes through Tanzania, Lake Victoria, Uganda and southern Sudan, and the Blue Nile starts at Lake Tana and flows into Sudan from the southeast. Both sections of the river eventually meet up again at Khartoum, in Sudan. nile_river_bylifeisart Photo by Lifeisart boat_on_the_nile_by_kiwik87 Photo by Kiwik87 CIMG0728 Photo by Juligomoll Valley of the Kings This piece of land was used to build tombs for Pharaohs and important people from the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Dynasties. These tombs were built over nearly 500 years from the 16th to the 11th century BC. The valley shot into fame when the tomb of Tutankhamun was found in the area, making the Valley of the Kings one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. For over 4 000 years, until modern architecture stole the show, it was the tallest building in the world. Huey’s Trip Diary - The ‘Best of Egypt’ - Part 1

Monday, January 10th, 2011
  • Google+
One of our intrepid travellers, Huey, travelled on the 'Best of Egypt' 14 day accommodated trip which started on the 5th December 2010 in Cairo, and wrote us a daily diary! Here is the first part of her series of diary entries.... Day 1 - Cairo Meeting up with our tour leader, Dave, at Havana Hotel in Mohandisseen was a breeze - we got briefed about the paperwork required (travel insurance, passport copies etc) & met our fellow travelers over some beers & dinner - all ready to embark on the adventure of a lifetime together tomorrow! Day 2 - Cairo (Egyptian Museum, Pyramids of Giza & Sphinx) The first day of the trip cannot begin in a better or grander way - the morning will be well-spent in the huge Egyptian Museum where some of the more important & famous artifacts & Pharaoh mummies are stored. museum Our Egyptologist guide was invaluable in explaining the history background & stories behind the artifacts & major historical events of this ancient civilization where he gave us a quick lowdown on the key artifacts and a thorough introduction to the most important boy-king of all time, Tutankhamun. His various treasures & of course, his infamous 110kg pure gold death mask were all on display for us to marvel at. Some of the other highlights at the museum are also the Royal Mummies Room (entrance LE100) & the Animal Mummies Room, which is very fascinating to see mummies from millennia back still in great state of preservation. After lunch, it is the moment all have been waiting for - the Great Pyramids of Giza! As we approached the Giza plateau, which is only at Cairo's city fringe, the amazement of finally seeing the giant structures cannot be described with words. As we walked towards the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the sheer scale of it all just kept us speechless as we pondered how ancient Egyptians had the intelligence, knowledge & means to put together such majestic structures which still remain standing after 4,000 years. pyramids The camel ride across the Giza plateau where the Step Pyramid of Saqqara is visible from afar is also an experience not to be forgotten. Riding the camel which the people of the desert have used for centuries while approaching the Pyramids certainly made us feel like we've travelled back in time, to those ancient days where Gods & Goddesses were beyond divine, to inspire construction of the Great Pyramids. We visit the Sphinx next, which is also equally awe-inspiring considering how it was carved out of one solid block of sandstone! Of course, with the Pyramids as its backdrop, our pilgrimage to the classic Egyptian icons were complete. However, there are many more amazing sights that await us for the next 2 weeks! When To Go Overlanding

Most overland trips cover long distances through many countries and also many different climates therefore there is no ‘best time to travel’. Any time is a good time! Africa has diverse landscapes and the weather changes drastically from country to country, region to region - even sometimes within the same city. Namibia - Rain 1 Southern Africa Southern Africa consists of a many diverse countries and each has their own weather patterns. Southern Africa has two clear rainy seasons – summer and winter. Rains in the winter mainly occur in the south western part of South Africa. Most other countries receive rain during the summer months (October to March). East Africa From beaches to mountains to vast plains, the region has a huge range of terrains and climates. The climate of East Africa is typically equatorial with mid to high temperatures year round and little seasonal variation, especially close to the equator. Large variations in temperature are caused by altitude; it is cooler the higher you get. There are two short rainy seasons in East Africa; one around April, and the other in October/November. North  Africa North Africa is mostly taken up by desert and semi arid climates. The Mediterranean also forms part of North Africa and the coastal regions receive hot, dry summers. Rainfall is minimal and usually comes in the form of short thunderstorms. Temperatures vary depending on the proximity to the coast. West Africa West Africa sees a pretty varied climate across the year with 2 distinct wet seasons, high humidity and high temperatures. The humidity is of particular discomfort on the coast and when combined with high temperatures this can be very uncomfortable in some areas. The driest periods of the year fall between December and February, and then from July until September. Wetter periods are generally May/June and October. Middle East Large parts of the Middle Eastern countries experience drought as water is a scare commodity. Most countries consist of mainly arid, desert areas although pockets of green, fertile valleys can be found along major rivers such as the Nile. Temperatures range from very hot in summer, to 15-25 degrees C in winter. Monday, November 8th, 2010

For a taste of rich, exotic culture dating back thousands of years to a time of Pharaohs, pyramids and early civilisations, Egypt budget travel offers the travel experience of a lifetime. Situated in North East Africa, bordering Israel and the Gaza Strip to the north-east, Jordan to the east, Sudan to the south and Libya to the west, Egypt is flanked by the Mediterranean Sea as well as the Red Sea, and is dominated by the Nile River and its fertile valley as well as the Eastern and Western deserts. Geographically, this makes Egypt one of the most fascinating and varied destinations, with a host of contrasting landscapes to be enjoyed alongside its many attractions and famous landmarks. Ramses IIEgypt overland tours showcase the country’s fascinating history and ancient cultures, giving the chance to explore one of the oldest civilisations in history dating back as early as 3200 BC. Some of the key highlights to enjoy on an Egypt backpacking tour include the following: Cairo The thriving capital city of Egypt is a blend of modern living and classic Egyptian culture, with a host of things to see and do in and around the city from mesmerising markets (souqs) to delicious local cuisine, world-class shopping centres, beautiful Islamic architecture, one of the oldest and largest music and film industries in the Arab world and plenty more besides. As one of the largest cities in Africa and the Middle East, a visit to Cairo is not to be missed. Giza Pyramids Famous all over the world and for very good reason, the pyramids of Giza are arguably one of the most popular aspects of any Egypt budget travel adventure, bringing thousands of travellers to this ancient landmark each year to explore these ancient tombs by camel or by foot. The Pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure are one of the last remnants of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and are simply out of this world! Sphinx Another not-to-be-missed landmark is the iconic Sphinx. Standing under the shadow of the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx guards the entrance to the pyramids as it has done for thousands of years. Despite a bit of wear and tear (and the loss of part of its nose), this Pharaoh’s head on top of a giant lion’s body remains one of the most instantly recognisable icons of Egypt, immortalised on postcards and posters everywhere. No Egypt overland tours are complete without a visit to the Sphinx. Red Sea The beautiful Red Sea is one of the most coveted scuba diving destinations, bringing huge droves of dive enthusiasts to the warm waters of this region to explore the rich marine life and coral reefs that lie below. Many dive schools can be found in this region, offering resort courses as well as full diving courses. Marine life to be found includes over 1000 species of fish as well as stingray, eels and dolphins, not to mention an abundance of coral reefs. This Egypt budget travel adventure is ideal for adventure-seekers who want to explore the area’s underwater delights. Valley of the Kings & Queens Yet another must-see on your Egypt backpacking tour is the Valley of the Kings & Queens. Situated on the west bank of the Nile River opposite Luxor, this is where tombs and temples of the ancient kings and queens of the 20th Dynasty or approximate era can be found - Tutankhamun’s un-robbed tomb is just one of the more recent discoveries that have been found here, along with many other undiscovered wonders. For a glimpse into the fascinating past of exotic Egyptian kingdoms, this is an absolute must-see on any Egypt overland tours! Good, Clean Fun - Try a Turkish Bath

Monday, October 11th, 2010
  • Google+
Turkish BathNeeding some good, clean adventure while travelling through Turkey? Why not try a hammam, or a Turkish bath as its better known. Upon entering the hammam dressing room you will get a cotton wrap, or pestemal, and a pair of slippers, or terlik, along with a key to your cubicle. Once you have got your kit off and wrapped up in the wrap you are ready to go. Off to the sauna style room you go with it's hot, raised stone platform  in the center, surrounded by bathing alcoves in pretty coloured quartz tiles. The tiles remove static electricity from the air and help to relax the mind and body. You stretch out on the stone platform and work up a sweat. Then your attendant take you to one of the basins and you're scrubbed cleaner than you ever have been in your life! A coarse mitt removes layers of dead skin, then comes the soap. Next, you are doused in warm water over and over and scrubbed clean again. Back to the stone platform for your massage (which is a bit rougher than a traditional Swedish massage) before you head off to the cool room to chill out and drink some tea. And that is that! Whew!
