African photography: sunrise photos

Monday, June 25th, 2012

There are few things on this green earth that are exquisitely stunning first thing in the morning. I’m sure even Scarlett Johansson wakes up with an afro and morning breath that can melt a tent peg. Take a sweet hop and a skip over to Africa though, and every morning you’re met by the soul warming beauty of the morning sun. As the sun comes up, rays beam across the landscape like lanky arms giving that wake-up stretch before it springs into full-paced rising and shining. This sunrise is the star of the show in many brilliant frames captured in African photography.

When you travel Africa, there is simply nothing better to do than wake early, make yourself a cup of coffee and watch the horizon birth light. Just don’t forget your camera.

African photography missing artists:

Harvested from Pinterest, all signs of photo credit flew out the window, I used Google Chrome’s image search to find out who exactly snapped these African photography gems. Unfortunately even the greatness of Google’s think-tank was not able to help me, so any direction on who took these gorgeous images would really be appreciated.

As for the question of what you’d rather wake up to everyday: a sunrise or Scarlett Johansson? I think we all know the answer to that question! The sunrise may out-shine Scarlett… but Scarlett knows how to make coffee.

Who would win the fight in a gorilla vs leopard scenario? Discovery Science has created a visual re-creation of what they think would happen if a gorilla and leopard were to brawl.

Watch the gorilla vs leopard re-creation video:

The Namib Desert: Namibia’s ultimate adventure destination

Tuesday, June 19th, 2012

The Namib Desert if home to the much loved destinations of Sossusvlei, Namib-Naukluft National Park and Swakopmund. So basically what I just said there is that the Namib Desert is home to scenic adventure, game park adventure, and a heavy dose of muscle clenching, scream inducing, pupil dilating adventure. Namib Desert trips offer opportunity to experience Namibia’s ultimate adventure destination!

Swakopmund: the ultimate adventure destination

Ever heard of Swakopmund? Yeah, well that little coastal town is the adventure capital of Namibia! Here you can do all the fun crazy things your mom wouldn’t do.

So why Swakopmund and not anywhere else? Well because after you’ve spent a day walking around the town scoping out the place’s intriguing history, culture and beach, you feel a rush of ‘what can we get up to next?’ coming over you. Luckily, the answer is… almost anything!

Here are a few of the awesome experiences well worth your dollars:

- Quadbiking

- Ballooning

- Micro-light flights

- Skydiving

- Paragliding

- Sea kayaking

Is there bungee jumping in Namibia?

One adventure activity you can’t do in Swakopmund is bungee jumping. Not yet anyway. I’m sure that if Swakopmund had a massive bridge, they would strap a bungee cord to it and let travellers take the plunge over a sea of sand. But until then…

If you’ve never been bungee jumping before and you were hoping to experience the thrill while in the Namib Desert, you’re probably wondering how it would have played out. Well the truth is, the exhilarating free-fall would’ve made you scream like a little girl. For those who were hoping to experience bungee jumping for the second time, the experience would’ve been different. The free-fall would’ve still been exhilarating and you still would’ve screamed like a little girl, but this time, you’d buy the video.

Sossusvlei: the ultimate scenic adventure destination

Adventure activities in Sossusvlei are less about teasing your breaking point, and more about lapping up the sheering beauty of the Namib Desert dunes and smaller wildlife.

Here are a few great ways you can adventure your way through the scenery:

- Ballooning

- Guided hikes

- Scenic flights

Sossusvlei is home to stretches of the tallest shifting sand dunes in the world. Here, the contrast of the blue sky with the striking orange hue of the dunes is stunning. This experience wouldn’t be complete without a guided hike up Dune 45 – Sossusvlei’s ‘My Precious‘. Dune 45 stands over 170m high and is made up of 5 million year old sand that was blown there from the Orange River and Kalahari Desert. Journeying up this grand mound one can’t help but imagine an ancient civilisation trudging through the sand on a mission cross country with concealed shanks ready for a tussle. Sossusvlei I would label the ultimate scenic adventure destination!

Namib-Naukluft National Park: the ultimate game park adventure destination

The Namib-Naukluft National Park includes the scenic region of Sossusvlei, and is, quite surprisingly, home to wildlife inhabitants and its fair share of greenery. Often one assumes that because an area is located within the Namib Desert, it’s dryer than Woody Allen’s humour. Wrong – this desert does foster vegetation! Creatures that roam this hyper-arid area include snakes, geckos, insects, hyenas, gemsbok and jackals. Along the coastline thousands of birds flock around the park’s lagoons, wetlands and mudflats.

Here are a few great ways you can adventure your way through the scenery:

- Ballooning

- Guided hikes

- Scenic flights

The destination of Deadvlei can also be found within the park. This stretch of Namibia sees trees that have been dead for over 550 years, still firmly planted in the parched, white clay cracked ground. What does parched, white clay cracked ground look like? Granny’s heels.

You must be thinking “No lion? No elephant? No cheetah? Where is the game park adventure in that?” Well, the Namib-Naukluf National Park is… wait for it… the biggest game park in Africa, and fourth largest in the world! The desert tours are an adventure of note – delving into the area’s history and eco-system are just a mind-blowing adventure of discovery.

I know by now you’re ready to explore the ultimate adventure destination of Namibia’s Namib Desert. All you need is the dough. Idea! Collect tin cans whenever possible. Sell them to a tin recycling plant for cash. Book your overland trip to the Namib Desert and kiss Mama’s basement goodbye (for a few weeks at least).

Videos of Africa: safari wildlife

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

This is one of the better safari videos of Africa I’ve come across. It’s doesn’t have long frames of buffalo swishing their tales, but rather includes short snippets of good footage capturing the true character and quirky behavior of safari wildlife. Definitely an amazing Africa safari experience caught on camera.

Watch this Video of Africa’s safari wildlife:

You get people who think they know what African safari wildlife are all about. They flip through magazines and see photos of lions with their head back, roaring; their wild side exposed, captured and printed thanks to African photography. Then you get those who love watching safari wildlife. Watching from a distance. They tune into National Geographic, they YouTube videos of Africa and watch in adoration and amazement from the comfort of their sofas.

Videos_of_Africa_safari_wildlife

Above: “Quick, Simba, throw me a Skittle”

When you watch videos of Africa, you get the chance to observe wildlife up close. You get to watch a cheetah manoeuvre it’s sleek anatomy and race after dinner. Returning satisfied.

Wildlife safaris captured on film by those who know what they are doing are simply amazing – no detail is spared. You get to see the way a buck wrinkles its nose when it drinks. The way a cheetah climbs a tree with such ease. The way giraffes stand dead still; the only sign of life coming from it’s flittering ears.

So if those who just flip through magazines and don’t watch videos of Africa, are missing out on all the small things that make Africa so amazing, then what are those who watch videos of Africa missing out on that those who travel on an Africa safari trip experience? Find out.

Food ideas for camping in Africa: Braai the perfect steak

Tuesday, June 12th, 2012

You’re out travelling in some forgotten part of Africa when you come across a farmer’s butchery. Your food ideas for camping in Africa weren’t well thought out at all. You’re now so sick of eating all that canned food you packed and your craving for a juicy steak kicks in faster than a three-year-old can eat a crayon.

food_ideas_for_camping_in_Africa_perfect_braai

The three most important things you’re going to need in order for this brilliant food idea for camping to prove successful:

INGREDIENTS

1.  Campfire

2.  300g Steak

3.  Marinade, salt, pepper

2.  Grid

3.  Thick stick for stoking

METHOD

Step 1: The fire

Firstly you’ll want to make a campfire. If you’ve been camping in Africa for a while, this shouldn’t be a problem. Once your fire is lit, you’re going to want to let that bad-boy burn for about an hour before it’s ready to introduce your prime cut to.

Step 2: The meat

Now it’s time to treat your steak to a little TLC.  Stock up on condiments when at the butchery. Grab a bottle of Oom Pietie’s marinade and grab some salt and pepper if you don’t have any. Rub salt and pepper on the steak and throw the steak into a Ziploc bag of marinade before placing it in a cooler bag for an hour.

Step 3: The grid

Next, get your grid ready. Some people buy the fancy braai grids that have legs so you can stand it in the fire. A flat grid works brilliantly too. Just gather a few sturdy rocks and build up low pillars or a frame that you can balance your grid on. It seems a little rustic, because it is.  Goodness, I’d pull a broken wire fence off a rubbish heap if it meant steak for dinner! Grid sorted.

Step 4: The stoking

When your fire is ready, even out the coals by stoking them. Place your grid on your stable frame setup and leave it there to heat up for 15 minutes.

Step 5: Braai the perfect steak

Your fire and steak have been chilling for the past hour and it’s now show-time. Slap your steak on the grid for 5 – 7 minutes, depending on how thick Pietie cut them. Then flip the steak and allow to sizzle for another 4 – 6 minutes. Finally turn the seat once more for its last 2 minutes before removing from the fire.

Step 6: Realisation

Realise that you just managed to braai the perfect steak, and repeat process to make more.

Now that you’ve unlocked the secret to cooking the perfect steak, camping in Africa need never be beef-free again! I’m sure you’ll agree, steak is one of the best food ideas for camping in Africa.
