Benin Wildlife
Benin wildlife is fairly diverse, and faces major threats due to excessive poaching in the country. Hunting and habitat loss also place a large role in the drop in wildlife numbers.
The primary game areas in Benin are Pendjari National Park and W National Park. Pendjari is known for its large bird-rich areas, and has a smaller but diverse range of wildlife, while W National Park has larger populations of game, including large mammals and predators.
Animals in Benin
Animals in Benin include some rare species as well as wildlife endemic to West Africa. Game is concentrated within the two national parks, as well as the savanna regions where plains game is common.
Pendjari National Park is home to a fairly small range of species including elephants, monkeys, lions, hippopotamuses, buffalo and various antelopes.
W National Park, named after the shape of the Niger River meander, is a fairly major park which is home to a wide range of game including aardvarks, baboons, buffalo, caracal, cheetahs, hippopotamuses, leopards, lions, serval, West African elephant and warthogs.
