Benin's People
Benin's people are friendly and interesting, and with a diverse range of tribes living in the country, culture and traditions are all extremely diverse and region-specific.
The largest tribe is the Fon or Dahomeyans, followed by the closely related Asja tribes and the Aizo, who live in the south of the country and are mostly farmers. The Goun reside in the Porto-Novo area, while the Bariba can be found in the northern Benin region. The Yoriba were once from Nigeria, and are also a farming tribe, living in the eastern part of the country. The Somba live in the north-east and are comprised of a number of smaller sub-tribal groups, while the mostly nomadic Fulani tribes are starting to stick to the north-east areas. Other tribes through Benin include the Holli, Dendi and Pilapila or Yowa people, as well as a European population of about 5, 500.
Despite differences and regions, Benin’s people all share the same sense of friendliness and are welcoming and warm.
