Benin Money & Banking
Benin money and banking can be a bit of a challenge for unprepared travellers, however with a bit of planning this should not be a problem.
The currency is the West African CFA Franc (XOF), which is used throughout West Africa. There are some limitations on taking CFA Franc out of the country, but if declared it can be exported to neighbouring countries.
The currency which is most easy to exchange in Benin is the Euro, although even this can be tiresome as facilities are not always up to par.
ATM’s and cashpoints in hotels, shops and restaurants seldom work, so drawing money or using credit or debit cards is not always possible.
The easiest way to travel is to use a combination of credit or debit card and cash, and when ATM’s are working, draw a larger amount to see you through.
Banking hours are typically 08h00 to 11h00, when most Benin businesses and people stop for a lunchtime siesta, and then from 15h00 to 17h00, Monday to Friday.
