Benin languages are as diverse as the country’s culture, with a wide range of native languages spoken along with the national French language.
Yoruba languages are the most spoken other than or alongside French, which is a relatively ‘new’ influence from the French colonies that landed in Benin in the 1800’s. About 25 million people speak Yoruba across West Africa and even in some rural areas of Brazil.
Fon languages are also fairly common, and are spoken by approximately 1.7 speakers. Fon is a part of the Gbe language cluster and belongs to the Volta-Niger branch of the Niger-Congo languages.
Fula is also a fairly common dialect in West Africa, although it not as widely spoken in Benin as it is in Sudan and Cameroon.
Knowing some basic French will ensure that you are able to navigate through Benin and converse with locals – which is essential to really appreciate Benin’s rich and interesting cultures and people.
