Benin customs are fairly straightforward, and are much the same as any West African country. Travellers should plan ahead to ensure that their luggage meets requirements to avoid any hassles or delays when arriving in Benin.
The following items are prohibited or restricted:
- Human or animal parts or remains
- Explosives, firearms, weaponry, and their parts
- Pornographic and/or obscene material.
- Hazardous waste, including used hypodermic needles or syringes or other medical waste
- Packages that are wet, leaking or emit an odor of any kind
- Plants and plant material, including cut flowers
Currency limitations apply for import and local currency (CFA Franc XOF) is allowed to be brought into the country without limits, while foreign currency has no limitations as long as it is declared on arrival.
Exporting currency has some limitations, with no restrictions of local currency for EU, no limitations on non-EU country exports if declared and a limit of XOF 100,000.
