Benin Conservation

Benin conservation efforts are largely based on reforestation and game replenishing projects, as well as awareness and protection efforts to prevent further damage to key areas.

Reforestation aims to replenish the area’s most devastated by deforestation, including the country’s few remaining gallery forests and woodlands. Replanting water-friendly trees and plants in key areas is essential to prevent permanent damage.

Certain wildlife species, including large bird populations, are being introduced into key areas, most notably Pendjar and W National Parks. Species already introduced include fox kestrel, red-thighed sparrowhawk, senegal parrot, violet turaco, blue-bellied roller, red-throated bee-eater, yellow-billed shrike, pied-winged swallow and togo paradise-whydah.

Preservation Benin

Preservation Benin is an essential part of conservation efforts in the country, and 12-22% of the country’s natural areas are protected.

While this does not always prevent further damage, protected areas still offer a sanctuary for birds and wildlife living in these protected habitats. The ‘W region’ which lies near the W National Park is one of these protected areas, and is comprised of wetlands and forest habitats home to a range of game including cheetah and elephant.
