Benin Birds

Benin birds are comprised of a number of endemic and non-endemic species, with a range of rare species to be seen.
Studies of birds in Benin have been fairly minimal, and until 1993 only 425 species had been recorded. Intensive studies since then have recorded 572 species,  however there is breeding evidence for only about 20% of this number, making further studies something of a challenge.

Birdlife in Benin

Birds that have been sighted include some beautiful rare species such as white-crested tiger heron red-thighed sparrowhawk, thick-billed cuckoo, black-shouldered nightjar, white-bellied kingfisher alcedo leucogaster and yellow-whiskered greenbul.

Other birdlife in Benin includes over 50 raptor species, owls, hornbills, rollers, bee-eaters, several species of kingfisher and barbets, African swallow-tailed kite, crowned eagle, martial eagle, Pel's fishing-owl, white-browed forest-flycatcher, bahel paradise-whydah vidua, pelicans, flamingos, parrots, macaws and sunbirds.

Birding Benin

With a wealth of rare and endemic species to be seen, and last remaining forest habitats, birding Benin is becoming a fairly population attraction.

Friendly locals and country stability, plus a number of budget accommodations on offer for birders make Benin an easy and rewarding destination for bird watching.
