Build Your Trip to Africa
Africa Overland Travel Insurance
Do I need travel insurance to go on a overland trip? Short answer – absolutely.
In fact it is compulsory that you obtain adequate Africa Travel Insurance before you leave home and head off on an Overland trip. Ideally you should organize it as soon as you start booking everything else. The insurance offered by your Credit Card company is NOT in any way sufficient.
Adventure Activities
Africa Overland Travel is a bit of an adventure sport in itself and you will have the opportunity to participate in some pretty out-there and down-right amazing activities so your travel insurance needs to cover all ‘action’ eventualities. Such as skydiving, scuba diving, white water rafting, horse riding to name a few. Make sure you read your policy carefully and if needed, ask the insurance company to give you the list of exclusions. If you plan to take up any of these activities then your insurance cover needs to specify they are included.
Medical Cover
Check out the Repatriation section and make sure you are covered should you need to be flown home or to the nearest and best medical facility (even if it is outside of Africa) in the event of a medical emergency.
Baggage and Personal Effects
Well, you are on an Africa Overland Tour so you are not going to have all your best threads, your Gucci handbag or Rolex watch with you anyway right? Loss of luggage may therefore not be that important to you if those t-shirts and shorts are easily replaced.
Cameras & Equipment
What may be important to you is your camera and/or video gear. Most travel insurance policies cover these items to a set, fixed amount. If your gear is worth more than that, make sure you specifically point it out to the insurer and if necessary pay a small extra charge to have the item fully covered to its actual value.
