Angola's People
Angola's people include a very diverse range of cultures, with a large percentage of local Ovimbundu tribes as well as various ethnic groups present in the country.
The largest ethnic group is the Ovimbundu, who are mostly traders, farmers, and herders who live on the Bié Plateau of central Angola. They speak both Portuguese and the Umbundu. The Kimbundu is the second largest tribe, and shares the Umbundu language.
There are a large percentage of refugees in Angola, which was estimated to be approximately 12,100, with an additional 2,900 asylum seekers by the end of 2007. In 2008 there were approximately 400,000 DRC migrant workers, about 30,000 Portuguese and at least 20,000 Chinese living in Angola.
As a nation, Angolans are stoic by nature and are very friendly and accepting of their circumstances. As one of the poorest countries in the world, with decades of war and unrest, Angolans have had a long history of suffering and poverty but have a sense of acceptance and stoicism despite this troubled background.
