Angola Money & Banking

Angola money & banking should be considered carefully before embarking on your travels. Cash is most widely accepted, and while most places accept US dollars, no other currency is accepted aside from the Angola New Kwanza.

There are very few ATM’s, and even the few that can be found will not accept foreign cards. Credit cards are only accepted at major hotels, but a few places such as major hotels, or bureau de change can convert currency.

It is best to come prepared with suitable currency, and keep all money safe in a decent money bag which should be kept underneath your t-shirt out of sight.

Banks in the country include the National Bank in Luanda, Central Bank of Angola also in Luanda. There are a number of Western Union branches throughout the country which can be used for deposits or withdrawals.

There is however a limit on the amount of money which can be imported and exported, which is US $15, 000 or the equivalent. Funds over this amount will need to be cleared by the National Bank, or you could face seizure or legal problems.
